These mixed media works all stem from David’s love of the resonance of words and languages, from his enthusiasm for letter forms, codes and scripts of all kinds and linked to this, a long held interest in etymology.

Here we have individual letters, words and phrases written in a different way – invented or abstracted, decipherable and undecipherable texts that yet still possess an integrity of their own. Sometimes the intention, the meaning is clear, at other times obscured.

There’s a strongly visible sense of narrative to these pieces, a form of storytelling and forward movement. The structure David uses is often taken from the natural world – from the arrangement of birds on a lake, a pattern of leaves in a pond plant, or lichen on a paving stone for example.
