‘I seek sanctuary in my artworks, creating them becomes a narrative of expression, a place to outpour my emotional experience of the environment. Therapeutic in understanding the imagination. Sanctuary, individual stories that relate to the underlying theme.’

Jonathan Oakes is an experienced artist who is passionate about the natural world, the majority of his artwork is deeply influenced by environmental concerns. His highly individual paintings are abstract by definition but have an illustrative quality about them. He utilises layers and mark making to add depth and narrative. In general his artworks are created using mixed media on canvas, paper or large abandoned photographs. He hopes to create a starting point for the viewer’s imagination as they contemplate the artwork.
